How will you take a break from tech this summer?

Compiled by Grace Horvath

“I’m going to spend time at the pool. No phones in the pool — you can’t text and swim — but it will be nice to go out. We (she and a friend) like to go in the mornings when the sun is rising. We also like to spend time (in) downtown Taylor, Curio Mrvosa, bookstores. No phone needed there. Just looking at the books and the bookstore. Sometimes getting Hola Aloha, shaved ice. And then also, Old Taylor High.”

— ROSE SIMONS, TAYLOR

“I … go to festivals, I go out with my friends and I do stuff and I feel like that in and of itself helps cut back the technology usage. … But I feel like summer … just helps detox, if that makes sense. There (are) fairs and rodeos and festivals and concerts.”

— KENZIE MORRIS, HUTTO

“Honestly, I plan on going to a bunch of museums this summer. Going downtown, hanging out and going to the pool. Going to the library more, reading a lot more. I plan on spending a lot of my time reading, outside of getting a job and all that … There’s a lot of stuff that I have that is not technology centric. … We (she and her friend) have concerts lined up … Just like hanging out. … Being more physically active. Walks with the dog.”

“We value outside living. I grew up European in Denmark/Scandinavia. If we had a house we would have gardens, we would have more things like that. … (In the 1980s and ‘90s) even though we had video games and I’m a movie nerd, too, … when the sun goes down, if it’s good weather and you have the opportunity to play sports or play with your friends, we would. We were always outside. I grew up with that so I assume this summer we’re probably going to do some of the same things.”

“I love the outside. I like nature and … I like looking at things. But sometimes, I get a little too addicted to the (tech) games … And I don’t want to be on the games, but I’m, like, glued to it. Or I’m, like, glued to my phone or stuff like that. I don’t really like it but then at the same time I like it because it’s fun. And I’m like, ‘Which one’s (more fun)? Outside or games?’ Normally, I like outside more because you can explore more, go farther. You can go to different countries, look at different flowers.”
