With summer in full swing, kids are everywhere, from browsing local libraries to swimming in pools across the region. For parents who need a break, both Taylor and Hutto have expanded their summer camps for 2024.
For school-age students from 5 to 12, the programs combine city and school district resources to entertain kids with themed camps. Officials said the camps keep the kids engaged with art projects, science experiments and everyone’s favorite: games requiring physical activity.
The summer camps use school district resources including campuses, staff and even buses. The camps are purchased through each city’s park and recreation portals.

KEEPINGYOUCOOLATTHEPOOL
The Doris Roznovak Aquatic Center, 1600 Veterans Drive in Taylor, is the place to be from Memorial Day to Labor Day. It’s been a destination to cool off for years, and 2024 is no different. As a mainstay for families in the area, the pool offers a weekly free swim session and swim lessons for all ages.
Starting with a parent and child class for babies 6 months and older to classes for adults, swim lessons are held in the afternoons, beginning at 4:20 p.m.
Classes are divided by age and swimming ability and facilitated by the Hutto Family YMCA.
Swim lessons are offered in four-day weekly sessions through Friday, Aug. 2. Each session is $70 for YMCA members and $97 for community members.
The aquatic center will offer a free swim session on Wednesdays from noon to 2 p.m. once a week during the summer.
Pool hours are noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1-8 p.m. Sunday.
Admission for adults — 13 and older — is $3, kids 4 to 12 are $2, and those 3 and younger enter for free.
Patrons who are 60 or older enjoy a discount and enter for $2.
Punch cards are available for the pool: A family pass with 30 admissions is $45 and a family pass with 60 admissions is $90.
The pool accepts cash only. More information can be found at https://www.ci.taylor.tx.us/746/ Swimming-Pool-Splash-Pads.
GETTINGFITWHILE STAYINGCOOL
Water aerobics is back, and it is the most popular fitness class offered, according to the Taylor Parks and Recreation Department. This beginner-friendly fitness session meets three days a week for the summer, an increase over last summer.
“Swimming is not required, and a lifeguard is always on duty when in the pool,” said Betsy Schultz, the city’s Parks and Recreation superintendent.
The class is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Sessions are $5 each, and pool admission is included in the class fee.
You can also purchase a fitness class 10-punch card for $40.
MASTERSSWIMPROGRAM NEWFOR2024
The Taylor Parks and Recreation Department will offer a Masters Swim Program for adult swimmers who want to improve their form and endurance. The program features structured workouts with interval training focusing on fun, fitness and friendship, organizers said.
“In addition to group swim lessons for kids, we’ve been able to add a Masters Swim Program for adults. The Masters Swim program has been requested for a few years now, and we’re thrilled it’s finally happening,” said Stacy Olsen, president of the Taylor Parks and Recreation Advisory Board.
The Masters Swim Program will be offered twice a week from 7-8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Coaches will provide instruction and feedback for swimmers of all abilities. Held at the Roznovak Aquatic Center, 1600 Veterans Drive, the Master Program is best for swimmers who can swim at least 100 yards or two laps of the pool, no matter the speed.
Interested swimmers can register at https://secure.rec1.com/TX/taylor-tx/ catalog.
The once-a-week monthly fee is $28, and the twice-a-week monthly fee is $48.
