BIZ BUZZ
HUTTO – Sylvia Helfond will tell you she opened Cumberland Road Art Studio to give card-making classes without having to move around her art supplies.
But the business at 3333 CR 119 turned out very different than what she planned.
“The idea was to have everything in one place and have people come to the location. And so it just sort of grew from there and turned into the studio,” Helfond said. “What’s funny is I’ve only held one card-making class because I just really love sharing all the other types of supplies we have here.”
Since opening last April, the studio has become a crafter’s paradise.
The walk-in art space offers customers a jam-packed selection of craft supplies including paints, inks, markers, stamps, glitter, card stock, beads, yarns and all the tools. The studio even has scan-and-cut machines for creating personalized items such as mugs and mouse pads.
Customers can bring their own projects to work on, or explore what’s available and start something new. The point is to empower creativity in whatever form inspires people, Helfond said.
Spacious tables, free coffee and highspeed internet make the spot friendly for remote workers as well. Helfond said sometimes people want to get out of the house, so they bring their laptops to get some work done and relax with crafts afterward.
The $10 admission gives customers access to the space and almost all of the supplies, tools and materials. Helfond does stock a few specialty pieces with an additional charge, such as items for doing sublimation printing and paint-your-ownpottery that will be fired by a neighboring ceramic studio after painting.
“I intentionally want this to be a budgetfriendly location. I want people to be able to come here often,” Helfond said. “The $10 model is to not let cost keep people from creating art, meeting with friends or getting some much-needed downtime.”
Monthly subscriptions are available. Crafting enthusiasts can also earn studio credits by donating new or lightly used art supplies.
Helfond has hours set aside on weekend afternoons for families and children to do crafts, but Wednesday through Friday and weekend evenings are dedicated to adults only.
Helfond offers dedicated hours by appointment for parents who want to include art in their child’s homeschooling activities.
Private crafting parties are available, and customers can bring their own food and drink. The studio has small snacks and beverages for sale as well.
“My mission is about creating community and I’m hoping people see that and will invest their time and tell others about it so this place is busy often,” Helfond said.
Hours for adults and supervised children are noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, adults-only hours 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, 4-9 p.m. Saturday and 4-6 p.m. Sunday.
Homeschool sessions are on Tuesday by appointment.
